The new attraction, "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End" Story Walk: A Journey of Remembrance, is finally opening at Universal Studios Japan on May 30. As the park's first-ever "immersive walk-through attraction," we took an early trip to the town of Äußerst!
The venue is "Stage 18" in the Hollywood area. What kind of magical experiences await in the approximately 20-minute journey, including the pre-show? Let's preview the attraction's flow and highlights together before you visit.
The Journey Begins on the Streets of Äußerst
First, guests are welcomed by a gate that signals the start of a journey. There's a sign for the magic city of "Äußerst," blue moon weed blooming at your feet, and even that familiar trunk Frieren always carries. Fans are sure to get excited just by this sight alone.
As you proceed through the lobby, you can hear the voices of bakers preparing bread for a festival celebrating those who passed the "First-Class Mage Exam," making the town's lively atmosphere feel incredibly real.
To the Continental Magic Association's Archives! Meeting Frieren and Her Friends
In the pre-show area, 29 years after the death of "Himmel the Hero," you arrive in front of the northern branch of the Continental Magic Association. Here, you finally meet the trio: Frieren, Fern, and Stark! As the Magic Association is specially opening its archives to the public, we, the traveling guests, get to tour it with them.
You Can Cast Magic Yourself!? The Magic Association's Archives
Upon entering the archives, you'll find a large grimoire before you. Frieren discovers a "magic to relive the past," and an original story begins where everyone retraces the memories of their journey.
What's exciting is that in the rear area, there's an interactive grimoire section where we, the guests, can actually touch and control magic! It's a thrill to experience for yourself Fern's favorite "butterfly-summoning magic" she showed to Heiter, and the "water-manipulating magic" Kanne used in the First-Class Mage Exam.
Himmel's Statue and Blue Moon Weed: A Moving Climax
The journey concludes in a forest near Äußerst. Here, you'll relive Frieren's favorite magic and her memories from her final journey with Himmel.
The beauty of the "Era Meteor Shower," seen once every 50 years, and that famous scene of blooming a field of blue moon weed around Himmel's statue... You might find yourself getting emotional, enveloped in the memories of an unforgettable adventure.
Knowing the Original Story Doubles the Fun! A Re-watch Is Highly Recommended
Please note, the scenes introduced here are just a small part of the experience. You'll proceed through three rooms utilizing dynamic sound and giant screens, heading towards the climax. We highly recommend you embark on this "Journey of Remembrance," filled with both the excitement of magic and heart-touching memories.
One last thing. To enjoy this attraction 120%, it's best to watch the "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End" anime or read the manga beforehand. The attraction features many niche scenes that might be hard to appreciate for those unfamiliar with the series, making it more geared towards connoisseurs.
Whether you're a fan of the series or new to it, reviewing the memories with Himmel and the fierce battle with Aura will allow you to recognize famous scenes and feel an even deeper emotional connection.
