Experience an Immersive Ride in a Decommissioned Train! "FUTURE TRAIN," a Restaurant on an Abandoned Elevated Railway in Kyoto, Announces Grand Opening

New Course Meal Plan Launched

Opening September 20, 2025
The "FUTURE TRAIN" restaurant on an abandoned elevated railway in Umekoji, Kyoto, announces its grand opening.

DD Group, Diamond Dining, Umekoji High-Line, Kyoto Station Building Development, and JR West will hold the grand opening of "FUTURE TRAIN" on September 20. Located at 3-7 Kankijicho, Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture on the Umekoji High-Line and directly connected to Umekoji-Kyotonishi Station, this is Japan's first restaurant built on an abandoned elevated railway, aiming to revitalize Kyoto's Umekoji area.

Following a highly popular soft opening in August that attracted over 5,000 visitors to the dining areas in Cars No. 2 and No. 3, the grand opening will unveil two new sections. These include "FUTURE BIRD," an immersive experience area in Car No. 1, upcycled from a decommissioned "Thunderbird" Limited Express train (681 series), and the "Terrace Seating" in Car No. 5, situated adjacent to the active railway tracks. This launch completes the entire "FUTURE TRAIN" experience, with all cars now open to the public.

The interior of Car No. 1 is a collaboration between Sebastian Masuda, an artist renowned for promoting Japan's "Kawaii" culture, and the digital creative company IMAGICA EEX. Themed "the engine room of a train bound for the future," it offers a multi-dimensional experience that combines retro-futuristic decor with a sophisticated blend of CG visuals, lighting, and sound.

To celebrate the grand opening, reservations for the new "FUTURE IMAGINATION Course" began today, September 11. This special plan includes an approximately 20-minute immersive boarding experience inside "FUTURE BIRD" and a seven-course meal with an aperitif. The price is 11,000 yen, and a special 10% discount is available for bookings made by the end of October. Reservations can be made through the official website.
